Are you burnt-out and don't even know it? 10 Signs of Parental Burnout

So many moms that I've helped over the years come to me expressing how they feel overwhelmed, exhausted, irritable, and sometimes like they can barely stand their kid(s). They are walking through the fog of ground hog day where life seems to revolve around meal times, bedtimes, morning routine, cleaning, parenting, work and just plain old monotony of daily life. They feel they have lost parts of themselves (as we often do as moms) and are barely hanging on and just kind of stuck in survival mode. They wonder what has happened to them and when we talk more about the factors and symptoms... many are surprised to realize that it is actually Parental Burnout they are experiencing.

So WHAT is Parental Burnout? Here are 10 signs:

  1. Fatigue and Exhaustion: One of the most common symptoms of parental burnout - often overlooked as just a marker of motherhood. It can be so severe that it interferes with daily functioning.

  2. Emotional Dysregulation and Irritability: You may feel overwhelmed with simple requests, feel snappy and lose patience easily.

  3. Lack of Motivation: Everything just seems hard or uninspiring, which can lead to feelings of hopelessness and despair.

  4. Feeling Disconnected From Your Kids/Ineffective As A Parent: Difficulty meeting daily demands of parenting and/or feeling resentment, neutral or negative towards your kids.

  5. Physical Health Issues: Poor eating or sleeping habits, Inflammation, pain, poor digestion, headaches, rashes, extreme fatigue/adrenal insufficiency etc.

  6. Neglecting Personal Life: Hobbies, socializing, and self-care activities. Withdrawing from friends and family. 

  7. Increased Use of Alcohol or Drugs or Screens: Unhealthy coping with parenting stressors- numbing out or checking out to avoid reality.

9. Feelings of Failure and Inadequacy and Shame/ Guilt: Not feeling good

enough as a parent or in general.

10. Depression, Anxiety or Other Mental Health Issues: Anxiety can also look like

being overscheduled, too busy, perfectionistic. Depression may present as

irritability or low mood and may also include thoughts of suicide.

I ask this because..... you know what... I've been there myself many years ago.

When my son was a year and a half, I was barely sleeping, stressed out, tapped out, and so totally exhausted and depleted. I ended up taking a 3 month leave from work at the time just to sleep and recover from this serious case of burnout while my son went to daycare. I felt so defeated and lost. To make a long story short, I did recover with some help and I learned so many things from what I went through that I am on a mission now to help other moms (and particularly Moms of kids with ADHD) to recognize and beat parental burnout.

My own son was diagnosed with ADHD and learning disabilities in 2020, which didn't come as a surprise as his parent because he had always kept me on my toes! As a parent of a child with ADHD or other high needs or disabilities, you are at greater risk of experiencing parental burnout.
